Crow’s Foot notation focuses primarily on the relationships between these entities. It visually conveys how entities are related to one another and the cardinality of these relationships, which refers to the number of instances of one entity that can be associated with an instance of another entity.
Cardinality describes the nature of the relationship between two entities and is typically categorized as:
1. One-to-One (1:1): This indicates that a single instance of an entity A is associated with a single instance of entity B. For example, in a database of employees and workstations, each employee might be assigned exactly one workstation, and each workstation is assigned to exactly one employee. In Crow’s Foot notation, this relationship is represented by a single line connecting the two entities, with a short vertical line at both ends.
2. One-to-Many (1:N): This denotes that a single instance of an entity A can be related to multiple instances of entity B, but each instance of B is related to only one instance of A. For example, one department in a company can have many employees, but each employee belongs to only one department. In Crow’s Foot notation, this is depicted by a single line connecting the entities, with a short vertical line (indicating „one“) at the A side and a „crow's foot“ (three lines branching out) at the B side.
3. Many-to-Many (M:N): This relationship implies that multiple instances of entity A can be related to multiple instances of entity B. For example, students and courses have a many-to-many relationship because each student can enroll in multiple courses, and each course can have multiple students enrolled. In Crow’s Foot notation, this relationship is shown with a „crow’s foot“ at both ends of the connecting line.
